Two hours before Christmas eve approached, had to mix myself with the crowd to get a glimpse and a good capture of the nativity....

On my way home from attending the early dawn mass (Misa de Gallo) , a rainbow ( not a clear shot though) appeared in the sky...
...that seems to me a perfect reminder of hope ...
..and as we are about to welcome 2008, I pray that we'll realize even more that there's always hope and reasons to live! Have a fruitful and Peaceful New Year to all!!

On early dawn...

My eyes haven't been well lately that I need to have my glasses on. Well,just to give a little update of me for having been out of the blogosphere recently. Today is the third advent Sunday as a preparation for the birth of the baby Jesus in the manger.

As has been traditionally done here in the Philippines, we just started this day the early dawn mass otherwise known as "Misa de Gallo". And I am glad to have noticed a crowd of churchgoers that really filled me with awe. We hardly able to get a seat that we had to stand out in the church corridor hoping to at least get a glance of the Altar as the mass went on. It was a very solemn celebration where Catholics from all walks of life grouped together in preparation for the coming of our Saviour and King Jesus Christ.

The theme of the mass celebration speaks about humility. What is humility and how do we practice this value? How do we celebrate Christmas with simplicity and a sense of satisfaction,remembering Christ's humble beginning when He was born in the manger. These are questions I should like to answer in my mind. And that the material things or Christmas presents will just be meaningful when shared to those who do not have.

On early dawn, we await for the coming of Christ.The Lord has long come in our life. He's just there, there in our hearts."

On politics....

For quite some time, I had been writing commentaries regarding the economic and political issues in our country. But these issues went out to be so tiring to me and so I stopped airing my views and sentiments.

Late last night, while I was half asleep, left the tv on, I heard a news that stirred me back to my entire consciousness and that really made me awake! "Mrs. Arroyo along with 35 congressmen went on a European trip. The news reported that the trip could have been a gift from Madam President to these congressmen for drafting the impeachment complaint against her. It has been said too that they might also be using the government's funds for this trip and so this issue needs further investigation." For whatever reason, whether its an expense paid by the government or coming from their own pocket, I was like whaaaaattttt?? How could these "public servants" still manage to spend lavishly when they know in the first place that our country was just hit by typhoons and some of our countrymen are in chaos now living like wanderers at the evacuation center.

What's wrong with the mindset of this government?! Instead of spending money for their people, they can still afford to go on such a luxurious trip!!I couldn't help but feel so frustrated with these kind of leaders. I was really blown away with the news...I can't afford to keep my views over the government this time. I only hope they do not get enough sleep during that trip while thinking of the rest of our poor countrymen in chaos.

Rain, rain go away...

It's been raining here for quite a week already. Rainy days that will make us feel just rather stay at home and go idle while staring outside our window pane as the rain falls gently, than do outdoor activities. Rainy season has a lot of stories to tell. Times when heavy traffic is ever present on highways, when it's just really hard for ordinary laborers to get a ride from work back to their homes, and when students in some remote areas will have to cross muddy pathways inorder to get reach to their individual destination.

I remember a story from a very good friend of mine who is a public school teacher in one of the far-flung areas here in Mindanao. In one of our conversations, she shared to me how their class’ schedule would go esp. during rainy days. And that the students will have to beg to the teacher to dismiss them early because they already see the sky filled with gray clouds that signal the coming of the rain. They don’t wanna be caught by the heavy rain simply because they still have to walk a great distance from school to their houses. Some even have to cross rivers.There are no means of transportation always available for them aside from the fact that their allowance during the day is not even enough to buy their snacks and school projects. And then my friend added that sometimes she will have to understand when the next day, some of her students are already absent because of the bad weather.

The story appears to be so primitive to me.Because this is the kind of tell-tale that I often hear from old folks when education was yet fully developed during the ancient times.I never thought that even up to this present time, when education has really laddered and the cities have developed and yet it's surprising to realize that the tale of our grandparents is still existing.

It's just too hard to imagine that if it rains all the time in their area, we cannot expect from our learners to be globally competitive if the classroom setting appears to be this way. And so I personally wish to address the issue to their local government to take a closer look of it.

Gone are the days of our great grandparents when they had to walk longer distance and cross rivers because the city was still undeveloped. We are now living in a generation where technology rises so swiftly even without our notice. Humans have grown to be geniuses. And so while we continue rising so many high buildings in our cities and develop our commerce and industries, let us also not forget our future builders , our learners, esp. those in remote places. They too need concrete highways and a much more developed area by providing them somehow a means of transportation so they can safely travel back to their homes esp. on rainy season.

Education should not remain a privilege because the moneyed and the powerful can afford to send their children to exclusive schools within the city, but for those living in the remote areas who can only see hope that their children can finish their studies even when they go to public schools....EDUCATION must remain a RIGHT.

Flower in bloom...

Got this flower from the small pot in our yard. Not a good shot though, but how I wish I was able to notice it long before it withers. My parents love to plant. And I hope the next time around, though I'm not really good in planting, I will have my own plant in bloom posted here. I used to plant when I was 10 or 11. Staring at this, I suddenly miss that moment.

i could not imagine life without music.it seems to me that as it purges one's emotion, music is a like a healing balm that eases the hollow thing in a wandering soul.




this song reminds me of the wonderful times when i joined a choir group back in high school. everything was quite a struggle though. like when we had to wake up at early dawn before our presentation to do vocalization. when we were not allowed to drink anything cold and even eat ice cream!waaahhh! but our sacrifice was worth it all, we were able to give back to God the talent that He so freely gave. that was the experience that really brought me closer to my faith. though i don't have the same fire unlike before , to sing and go with the beat of the song, i will continue to sing in my own simple way ( sa bathroom na nga lang..hehe). i'm such a lucky one that once upon a time, i was given the chance to give my share in the world of music.

and so i say.."really, thank you God for the music..."

Trudging the path back to childhood memories...

As a tagalog saying goes, " Ang di marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay di makakarating sa paroroonan". Pero ewan ko lang po kung may koneksyon etong entry na'to..hehe!~

Trudging this pathway once again brought me back to the gold old days when I was still in my elementary days. Well,how can I ever forget the way to where the first time I learned about the alphabet,numbers and of course where knowledge,as for me, actually begins.

I remember there was a little pavement provided as a shortcut from where we lived before on the way to school,and so we can just walk within 20 minutes to get there before the flag ceremony started.For six years then,I along with my siblings trudged that roadway.I still recall back then when we had to walk that path while it was not yet concrete. It was really a tough and tedious walk especially during rainy season because it used to be really a muddy area and that pounds of mud would really stick every passerby's worn-out shoes and slippers.

Now,I am glad to have noticed that this pathway finally developed and for sure there will no longer be grade schoolers who will be walking this way to school,worrying during rainy season...looking back two or more decades ago...kadtong cute pa kaayo ko!;0p

Mommy...

Earlier tonight,while I was working on my report,I left my yahoo ID online hoping I could get the chance to talk to a very good friend who is now living from afar.I was busy thinking how I could possibly finish my work in less an hour..so I could rest after,when out of the blue, a new "window" popped up the computer screen. A young girl who simply wanted to have someone to talk with because of the recent tragic incident that happened to her family.Our conversation started when she said,"Ate, I am here because I want someone to talk with...I am bored and sad." And then I asked,"why and what happened?".

And so she started to share...

"My parents just passed away. They were victims of the recent blasting that happened in Glorietta 2. They were there to celebrate my other sibling's birthday. All three of them died. I am here in Zamboanga City with my relatives.I am 16 years old and a high school sophomore.I am in pain...ang sakit-sakit pala!Hindi ko matanggap na wala na sila!I am not there in Manila to see their wake. I am not ready..."

It breaks my heart to hear her story. And it left me speechless..couldn't think of a single word to comfort the girl or even say, "hey,it's ok..life goes on!".How can I say that to a 16-year old who is dealing with the most painful and tragic trauma in her life.

After an hour of conversing with her, she asked,"Would it be ok if I'll call you mommy and be my secondary mom?" And I was like..waaaahhhh!tiguwang najud diay ko!hehe!Joker pud ning bataa dah!;op

But anyway, I immediately said, "sure, why not?". You can call me mommy.Then she responded by saying.."Thanks...I just miss my mom..":0(

Animals weep too...

Animals can only tell to their master that they're not okay when they begin to show signs of timidity or losing the appetite for food.

Last night, while taking some stuff in the kitchen, i noticed a turkey in one corner..yep!its a live turkey.. ( for couples of months, father has been tending chickens and a male (gobbler) turkey and a female turkey in our little backyard)...well then as i noticed the turkey, unable to move in one corner, i touched it. i thought it was already dead but mother said that it's been a week that this turkey hasn't eaten and mom figured that it happened since the turkey hadn't had its egg hatched..i don't know if i got it right but it appears to be feeling the depression 'coz of what happened to its egg. Hmm.. this is new to me... a mother turkey weeping for its lost chick? Well sad to say, the next morning, the turkey died.

Ma'am, where you go?

Upon passing along Ilustre Street , a young boy came across my way yelling unto the two American women who were waiting for a taxi. The lad was like 7 or 8 years old, in his ragged clothes and worn-out slippers. He came near to the ladies and asked," Ma'am, where you go?".

I couldn't help but smile upon hearing the boy in his effort to speak such an almost perfect foreign language.The boy's broken English has registered in my mind up to this very moment. Must be an intelligent kid huh!At such a very young age, he should have been just home,enjoy watching tv., working on his assignment if ever he goes to school at daytime, or playing with his siblings and parents-- safe from the the unsuspecting threat of the night.

But sad to realize, this has been the usual scene that I see each night when I pass along Ilustre Street on my way home from work. Young boys whose age ranging from 7 to 10 yrs. old who help the people from that area get a taxi. They're the ones who hail a cab for them and get cents in return for such "customer service". Whether it's voluntary or out of dire need, still it's a child labor dilemma. And then again, I recall my encounter with the boy who was selling sampaguita along the drive-thru of McDonald's .

Sigh...we can only hypothesize to put the blame either over poverty or of parent's negligence in this case. I wonder what future there may be that holds for these children, but just hoping that fate will lead them unto a good luck and will not be part of the delinquents of this alarming society.

A cherry on top...

One time, Chris (my student) and I ordered these two glasses of coffee shake that come from different flavors. Its been awhile that I buried my face into books since the last time I read the enchanting stories in "How They Met" by Joey Green, when my big boss at work gave it to me as a Christmas present. And so out of the hope to fill my empty mind , I grabbed another collection that I bought already a month ago as my classmate in graduate school handed it down to me, while we were fortunate to avail books on sale during the "kadayawan Festival" recently held here in Davao. I started reading Du Bois' "Darkwater". Here's an excerpt that goes...

" I believe in pride of race and lineage and self; in pride of lineage so great as to despise no man's father; in pride of race so chivalrous as neither to offer bastardy to the weak nor beg wedlock of the strong, knowing that men may be brothers in Christ, even though they may not be brothers-in-law. I believe in Liberty for all men; the space to stretch their arms and their souls, the right to breathe and the right to vote, the freedom to choose their friends, enjoy the sunshine, and ride on the railroads,uncursed by color; thinking, dreaming, working as they will in a kingdom of beauty and love."

Du Bois is an African-American, an artist and a real intellectual man so proud of his race. He was a civil rights leader who aimed to bring just and fight against discrimination and economic exploitation of the mostly wrongly interpreted black people of his time. And indeed he'd proven his lot.

The Capsules in my mind...

Spending the holiday on National Heroes' Day yesterday was like spending the right moment to figure out things, realize things and sit awhile over things. Hmm..seems like i've lots of realizations lately huh!;0p

Just one idle moment and then i found myself lying in bed in my personal heroes' ( my parents') bedroom. I actually only thought of taking a nap on a hot monday afternoon..not in my room but that of my parents. As i opened the window, I felt the fresh air blowing from the outside while I looked at with enthusiasm the wonderful color of the blue skies above. As my mind wandered while unable to close my eyes, i noticed the capsules neatly placed on the side table near the bed. After that idle scene, a wake up call came to me that i havent been home for a long time after all...and that i was often out for work , study and even with friends than spending wisely my time with my parents who might have already found their new best friends to sustain from the stresses of life.

And that their new companions in the daily doses of life are no longer their children...but the capsules in my mind.

Parang sandali akong nayanig ng mga pangyayari sa paligid ko, hindi lang dahil magulo pa rin sa Mindanao dahil patuloy pa rin ang mga giyera,patayan at terorismo...at maging pala sa personal ko ring buhay. Hindi naman ako naghihikahos...sapat naman ang kinikita ko upang kahit papano ay mamuhay ng desente. At dapat lang na masaya ako sa buhay dahil yun ang tama. But I guess I am a big wrong...and that money cannot buy everything. Ito ang pinakamalaki kong reyalisasyon sa buhay. Na hindi pala talaga lahat ng kaligayahan ng tao kayang tapatan ng bagay o pera.

Malungkot ang paligid ko..paano ko magagawang sarilihin ang maging masaya kung apektado pala ako. Sabi ng isa kong kaibigan..."pagod na akong magpakabanal, ev!"...para akong nalunod sa lungkot nung marinig ko yun sa kanya. Sana kaya ko ibsan ang kanyang sakit na nararamdaman. Sabi naman ng isa ko pang kaibigan, "mahirap kapag yung tama ang kelangan gawin..dahil minsan may halong sakripisyo."

Minsan kapag di ko na kaya sagutin mga tanong ng isang nasasaktan na pwede ring isa ako sa kanila, tumitingala nalang ako sa langit...baka sakaling nasa ulap lang ang mga sagot at lunas ng nararamdamang lungkot. Sabi nga sa kanta ni Yeng sa "hawak- kamay" di ba?

Masarap ang mabuhay , sa totoo lang. We have all the things in the world so freely laid to us by God. Nasa atin na lang siguro ang diskarte kung paano natin ito harapin o tanggapin ng nakangiti kahit sa sulok ng puso natin, may kirot palang nararamdaman. Ang drama talaga pala ng buhay ano? Akala natin sa mga teleserye o movie lang natin napapanuod. Parang extra-challenge...kapag di ka pumasa sa pagsubok, talo ka sa laban ng buhay. Pero paano nga ba ang di matinag...tao lang naman tayo..mahina..mahina tayo dahil nakadepende tayo sa sarili nating lakas at kakayahan.

Sabado ngayon, bukas ay araw ng linggo...kapag nagsimba ako bukas and i will surrender all my weaknesses to God..lalabas kaya ako ng simbahan na nakangiti?...yung totoong ngiti ha..because God already eases my pain away and carry the load for me.

my detour...

truly, there's a right time for everything. i have long anticipated the moment where i can travel for sometimes to at least give myself a head on out from my ordinary routine and enjoy watching the overflowing gifts of nature like the the wonderful sceneries that can be seen while on the way to my real destination. and that will give me enough realization that i ,indeed, live in a world so rich and beautiful .

and so on a sunny saturday afternoon, i packed bits of my personal belongings and did my own detour onward to Gensan city, the tuna capital of the philippines. the travel took three hours if you are going to ride on a non-stop bus, but i guess it would take four hours if you are going to ride a bus that would take one stop to Digos,another town before reaching Gensan city. i jam-packed myself into a non-stop bus to hopefully get there at the expected time that my friend there will be fetching me.

i told myself, this is it!i had to give myself a good-luck voyage as my first time to be really travelling alone in a place where bombers were once ever present. this has been my fears..i swear..but to my state of mind i kept thinking that if things odd are meant to happen, they will really happen..its just a matter of faith and courage, i know.

i tried not to get asleep during my travel...i truly wanted to enjoy looking at the wonderful sceneries as far as my eyes can see and feel the joy of contentment that my life is actually as vast as the sea. the wide farms..the green trees...and the mountains are indeed beautiful!

the city is very industrialized and still continued to develop. the folks of GenSan city are very cordial. well, observant as i may seem i am actually amazed to have noticed that i felt the sense of simplicity and contentment of the community settlers and even realized that i never saw a single beggar while my best friend accompanied me to their malls and marketplace.

most of my closest friends are from General Santos City and so its not at all a matter of curiosity for me to invade the place but a great chance to be feeling the environment where great persons i met,and eventually became a part of me, are coming from.i miss them actually as i travelled head on. i miss my very good friends gladys and sheng hoping they're just around,too bad i lost sheng's contact number. but then my travel's still worth a thousand smiles because finally i get to be reunited with my bestfriends back in college who are also a native of Gensan. i had a wonderful time with them, really. my two-day vacation seems like a whole year of experience of laugh and excitement with my friends around.

....as i go back to my hometown, davao , i know i am already bringing within me a memory that shall never fade. and a realization that we all are travellers in our own way in dealing with life. ..the only difference is that, sometimes we took too long and stay in one place when we can actually go and see what's at the far end.....its when we never stop to think that there's more about being our self and our destination in life... waiting to be realized.
